Wesley's Notes for ii Peter three:x
3:10 But the twenty-four hour period of the Lord will come every bit a thief - Suddenly, unexpectedly. In which the heavens shall laissez passer abroad with a cracking noise - Surprisingly expressed by the very audio of the original word. The elements shall melt with fervent estrus - The elements seem to hateful, the sunday, moon, and stars; non the iv, commonly so called; for air and water cannot melt, and the globe is mentioned immediately after. The earth and all the works - Whether of nature or art. That are therein shall be burned up - And has not God already abundantly provided for this? 1. By the stores of subterranean burn down which are so often bursting out at Aetna, Vesuvius, Hecla, and many other burning mountains. 2. Past the ethereal (vulgarly chosen electrical) fire, diffused through the whole globe; which, if the secret concatenation that now binds it upwards were loosed, would immediately dissolve the whole frame of nature. 3. By comets, i of which, if it touch the world in its form toward the dominicus, must needs strike it into that abyss of burn; if in its render from the sun, when it is heated, as a swell man computes, two 1000 times hotter than a red - hot cannonball, it must destroy all vegetables and animals long before their contact, and soon afterwards burn it upwardly.
People's Bible Notes for two Peter iii:x
2Pe 3:10 But the solar day of the Lord volition come. This expression commonly, but non e'er, refers to the second advent. Such is the meaning here. Equally a thief in the night. When people are not expecting it. Compare 1Th five:two Mt 24:43. In which the heavens shall laissez passer away. Encounter Lu 21:33. The elements shall cook. The material of which they are equanimous. The earth also and the works that are therein, shall be burnt upward. The earth and all human'south creations. That the world shall come to an end seems to be written in its very constitution. A slight change in the constitution of the atmosphere, or the decomposition of its h2o would wrap it in flame. Science finds the elements of final dissolution in the relations of the earth and dominicus. According to the ratio of increase in 2 centuries the would volition non have resources to feed its population. In a few hundred years the coal resources of the world volition fail. These and many other facts point to a necessary and inevitable change.
